The likely lads, back for one magical night...

So last night we thought we had seen Doherty at the top of his game and expected this second night to follow the same pattern of Wass, Jansch, Moss and a selection of the classics. Boy, what we didn’t expect was for Bilo to have a MASSIVE surprise up his sleeve. “Ladies and gentlemen, Carlos Barat.”. Cue massive intake of breath from every fan in the Hackney Empire, diffused when Peter then says “Yeah right, not for 25 quid”, just before the roof is taken off the place as Barat does indeed saunter coolly into view, picks up his guitar and suddenly there is a mass surge forward (a great difference to last night’s respectable seated reverence) as the two mastermind’s behind one of the greatest bands ever kick into ‘What A Waster’. Fucking hell.

It doesn’t stop there as Bilo and Biggles run through such classics as ‘What Katie Did’ and ‘Don’t Look Back Into The Sun’ even throwing in rarer faves like ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ and ‘Dilly Boys’. During a sweet cover of ‘Dream A Little Dream’, Barat tap dances across the stage as a beaming Doherty looks on and the following rallying cry of ‘Time For Heroes’ feels more like a band at the top of its game, than two old friends finally adding a proper full stop to the story.

‘Albion’ and ‘The Delaney’ finish things in style, at least inside the building. Afterwards, the duo appear at a window at the back of the venue for a run through ‘Cant Stand Me Now’ as Kate Moss, Sadie Frost and a throng of fans cheer them on. It’s like being back in the good old days. Astounding.
