Hackney Empire, 11/04/07
With Bilo acting as the Pied Piper, the latest chapter of the Peter Doherty story brings us to the Hackney Empire for an evening in the boy’s company and a setlist that has something for everyone, from Libertines classics to some of Babyshambles finest moments.
This isn’t a last minute gig where Peter turns up at some ungodly hour, he is on stage promptly to introduce Alan Wass and then pops up again to bring out Bert Jansch. Following this, he calmly strolls out and reminds us why he is such an important figure in the recent scene – and it’s not because of his courtship of Kate Moss, although she does provide a highlight, resurrecting her album work on the brilliant ‘La Belle Et La Bete’. Other standouts are ‘Pipey Mcgraw’, ‘The Blinding’ and a storming ‘What A Waster’. The only downside is The General mooching onto the stage for a runthrough of ‘Pentonville Rough’ which even the most dedicated ‘Shambles fan could charitably describe as rubbish.
A fine return for Doherty and one that can only be described as a victory for the modern minstrel.
