Turtles! Back! CGI!

Eastman and Laird’s heroes hit the big screen again in this brilliant CGI adventure that reunites Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo and puts them up against a new danger after their defeat of the infamous Shredder.

Yes, unlike most comic book adventures, this is no origin story – the makers cleverly realise that if you’ve bought a ticket for TMNT, you already know how they came to be and so the action starts a year after Shredder’s defeat, with Leonardo being sent off on a solo quest to become a better leader and Raphael becoming bitter and angry about the break-up of the team. Of course, Raph’s darkness is balanced by the comedic actions of Mikey and the calmness of Donatello who is now working in IT.

April has more attitude than in the animated series or the last trio of movies and for the first time there actually seems to be a point to Casey Jones. Impressive. Special mention should go to Patrick Stewart for a superb performance and to the rooftop fight in the rain where the animation will literally make your jaw drop.

If you’ve grown up with the Turtles, this new adventure will remind you why you loved them in the first place and should also introduce a whole new generation of geeks to the heroes in a half shell.
