The Dublin Castle, Camden Town
Of course, many wrote off Peter Doherty a long time ago. The chaos, the drugs, the tabloids, the arrests, it was perhaps too easy to forget what thrust him into the public eye in the first place – the music. Maybe it all became a little too big and what was needed was the band and the fans to go back to the spit and sawdust venues of old.
Babyshambles have always been better when they’ve got something to prove and here in the backroom of Camden’s infamous public house, Doherty and company were as white hot as the temperature and songs such as ‘Fuck Forever’ and ‘Killamangiro’ sparkled with sonic ferocity, somewhere between perfection and collapse.
In Drew McConnell, Doherty has a valuable sidekick keeping things together and keeping the band tighter than they’ve been for an age. Whether it be the mania of ‘Pipedown’ or the beauty of ‘Un Bilo Titled’, this is a band on top of its game and once again we are left wondering what is next for Bilo’s Musical Circus, but one thing is for sure, it’s definitely going to be worth the ride…
