Southampton Joiners, November 1st.
And so the surreal career of one of England’s greatest songwriters continues to surprise. We’ve seen Luke Haines support himself with the headline act playing a concept album based on international terrorism; we’ve seen him play at St Luke’s church, his spiteful tomes beautifully supported by an orchestra – where next for Mr Haines?
Well, new album ‘Off My Rocker At The Art School Bop’ matches Haines acebic lyrics with an electro backing that produces perhaps his most Pop collection yet. So what better way to promote this work than…returning to tiny venues with just an acoustic guitar and an arsenal of tunes that the latest sensations would kill for.
The set kicks off with a spirited ‘Leeds United’ and then spins through tracks from each of Haines’ incarnations – Black Box Recorder’s ‘England Made Me’, the brilliant title track from ‘Baader Meinhof’ and The Auteurs ‘New French Girlfriend’ amongst others.
Bypassing the drama of leaving the stage for the encore, Haines suggests we just pretend he’s been and come back and then says “Right, any requests?”. The small audience remained silent so we chanced our arm by shouting for ‘There’s Gonna Be An Accident’, causing Haines to crack a smile and say “Ha, you’ll be lucky. Anything else?” “Er, ‘Government Bookstore’?” “Now you’re just bring obscure!”. Eventually Haines settles for ‘Showgirl’ and ‘Future Generations’ and that will do for us.
