Dolly Dolly (Dogbox Records)
We guess in a way, we owe Piranha Deathray an apology. You see, the single has been sat unopened in Kendallrock Mansions for a couple of weeks now without so much as a solitary spin. This, as we’ll get to in a minute, has nothing to do with the delights inside, but more on first impressions – the cover looks awful and this coupled with the name made us think this was gonna be a journey into three chord indie hell. Boy, were we wrong.
The first clue should have been the appearance of Luxembourg keyboardist Alex Potterill sharing production duties and his poptastic keys wash liberally through the crystal pop of ‘Dolly Dolly’, which not only follows one of the classic rules of Kendallrock (that handclaps are always clever) but also manages to rumble along like an early Suede b-side that Brett Anderson just found down the back of the sofa – listen up The Boyfriends, this is how to use glam influences properly! Hang on, are those sleighbells? Just as we were contemplating this, it came to an abrupt end and the only thing we could do was spin it back, spin it back. A stormer.
