London Barfly, 19th September 2006
As Marion finally return to the London stage it is tough to work out who is more excited about it, the fans who have kept the faith since the band split following second album ‘The Program’, or the band themselves – both Phil Cunningham and Jaime Harding look genuinely ecstatic to be rocking the Barfly stage.
Not many bands would come straight out and play the pulsating and intense ‘Fallen Through’ straight off the bat, but Marion were never a normal band, doing things totally on their own terms rather than bowing to whatever the industry types were looking for – that’s how the band can return after all this time and still have fans travelling from all over the world to cram into the Barfly.
Rather than merely playing the back catalogue, Marion handpick a few classics (‘Time’, ‘Sleep’, ‘Sparkle’), throw in a b-side treat (‘The Collector’) and then fill the rest of the set with new songs – and with tracks as powerful as the brilliant ‘Crystal Blue’, it seems that the once-only-a-fans-dream third album could soon be not only a reality, but exceed all expectations.
Meeting up with Cunningham in the bar after the show, he admired my This World And Body tshirt, shook my hand and then jumped around like a Tasmanian devil shouting ‘We’re Back! We’re back!’ - and at that point surely no one would begrudge Marion a second chance at fame.
